Arden

Ocena: 5 (1 głosów)

Alice Arden, idealistic and wealthy beauty, burnt at the stake for killing her husband, the former mayor of Faversham in Kent. But was she really the one responsible for the most scandalous murder of the sixteenth century?

William Shakespeare, England’s greatest playwright, born thirteen years after Alice’s execution. Why does his first-ever play, written about this murder, not bear his name?

This is a story of two people – one reviled, one revered – whose fates become linked in a tale of corruption, collusion and conspiracy. Based on historical documents and recently published academic research, Arden unveils shocking new evidence about the murder of Thomas Arden and reveals, for the first time, a remarkable new theory about Shakespeare’s early years.

Arden - opinie o książce

" [...] It is said that she who marries for love without money has good nights and sorry days. [...]"

Wow! I've just finished reading "Arden" by GD Harper. It's a combination of historical fiction based on true events with drama and tragedy. The author presented the fate of Alice Brigandine later Arden and Will Shakespeare. Or more accurately, it's a book about the crime against Thomas Arden, Alice's terrible husband.
According to what the author wrote - Thomas Arden was a terrible man who wasted many lives with his actions. Because of him, his wife had a wasted life. He didn't appreciate her at all and didn't fully fulfil his role as a loving husband. It's worth reading this novel to understand the whole story. With Alice and Thomas, we move in the years 1536-1551.
With Will Shakespeare we move in the years 1586-1616.  He was the best actor, playwright and theatre owner. Why was he so interested in the case of Alice Arden and the murder of Thomas Arden?
Alice Brigandine, later Arden, was a beautiful fiery redhead. Nowadays, one would envy her hair colour, but in those days it was her curse. I thought she would settle down with the handsome tailor Tommy Mosby, with whom she fell in love. However, fate was very cruel to her and put a very cold man, Thomas Arden in her path, who really only loved money.

Thanks to this book, you will learn what it means to be cold, betrayed, conspiracies, regrets, complaints and, of course, a crime of love. Was it worth killing? Who was really behind the murder, and who was the mastermind? What was Shakespeare's life like? How did he start writing his plays? Did the Arden case influence him? You will find out when reading "Arden" by GD Harper.
After reading this book, I would like to get to know other works by this author.

In the middle of the book, I found black and white photographs. It is worth taking a closer look at them.

Thanks to the author for drawing my attention to this crime.

Thanks to GD Harper, you will see how human tragedy occurs. The author makes us realize that it is not worth getting married without love, being greedy and sniffing for money everywhere.

"Arden" is a book worth recommending.
