Being born into poverty and hardship in 1930s London, Matthew’s life was one of relentless struggle. One inadvertent act in defence of his mother would haunt his conscience forever.
Matthew’s journey takes him from the poverty of a cold stone granary to the opulence of Mayfair and Kensington Palace Gardens, where he starts a family of his own. Despite working his way to the top of the business world, he remains an outsider to London’s elite. He then realises that that same elite has an ugly underbelly. High society was a hot bed of depravity.
Will he correct society’s wrongs? Will the man who never succumbed to expectations be able to challenge his own destiny or will he simply accept the futility of it all?

"Choppiness on High Seas" by Arvind Wadhera is the story of the Stephens family. It's a very emotional story, showing, among other things, that money doesn't truly buy happiness, not all multimillionaires are bad, and a good education can change the fate of a poor person.
I met exceptional people here who amazed me at every turn. Gaila Stephens was a role model, who, despite poverty, was able to change the fate of her son Matthew. He was born in difficult times in 1930. From the start, he had a difficult time because his father didn't accept Gaila's pregnancy. She raised him alone. She set herself the goal that her son would be rich, and his family would not be poor. Did she achieve her goal? You'll find out as you read.
Besides these two characters, you'll meet other people who had a significant impact on Matthews' life. They are worth getting to know, as they are truly exceptional figures. I was a bit shocked by their actions. A plus for them, of course.
I can confidently say that the author rushed his novel a bit to present the stories of several people. There were moments when I was deeply shocked by the rapid pace of the action.
The plot captivated me so much that by the end of the book, I was literally in tears. My son was surprised and asked why I was crying.
"Choppiness on High Seas" is an excellent drama. For me, this is a mini-saga of the Stephens family. It's not worth missing.
The author touches on difficult and painful topics that should never be swept under the rug. I rooted for Matthews in his dealings with the millionaires. This attitude is worth emulating.
I'll gladly revisit this story sometime soon.
The cover is very interesting. I've identified all the characters with the people featured on it. I hope I've nailed it.
This was my first encounter with Arvind Wadhera's work, and I hope it won't be my last.
