Understanding Political Violence

This book locates the analysis of political violence within the sociological and criminological debate. It addresses forms of political violence from below (collective violence, insurgency, armed struggle, terrorism) and forms of political violence from above (indiscriminate repression, state violence, torture, war). The author discusses and critiques the contribution of criminological theory to this relatively neglected topic, and tries to highlight its shortcomings as well as its explanatory strength. The book combines theoretical discussions with supporting case studies.
